is the 75th anniversary of what may have been the biggest single weather event in america's history? i speak of the great dust bowl. that phenomenon was not con finded for the west as the dust went to chicago and new york in the days following. jim moran, thank you for the e- mail. you are right in your significance when you write about the significance of the dust bowl. you can't really pin it to one day. the he cans of the dust bowl lasted for years. it began really in the early 0s and lasted through the 30s. however, 75 years ago today was what has been called the -- i want to get the name right, the black sunday dust storm. the worst black dust storm to ever hit the united states. it was in the plains. these are some pictures from the time period. what had happened during the time of the dust bowl is the population in the plains states grew. farmers overfarmed the land and then we had a drought. any storm that came along blew more of that topsoil off. this was the period of time when people left the plains, sometimes just leaving their bar enfarms because they had overfarmed the land, mo
